Welcome to the USET Department of English Studies under Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

University of Skill Enrichment and Technology (USET) is a University for 21^st Century. It has been designed to create a skilled workforce from the technical and vocational education system developing a pathway to higher education for the workforce. The absolute aim is to train the large unemployed young population of the country to turn them into demographic dividend rather than a burden. USET is a Digital University that will fulfill the target goals of vision 2021 and 2041 and participate in the 4^th Industrial Revolution to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations. USET is accredited by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and approved by the Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh. The USET has been given the approval to run from a campus established at Signboard (Dhaka-Narayanganj Link Road).

The Department of English Studies offers an undergraduate program Bachelor of Arts(BA) in English and provides students with the opportunity to develop their understanding of the language and its teaching, to know and appreciate both seminal and creative works in language and literature, and also to develop literary and academic aptitudes of their own. Majors offered by the English department at the undergraduate level are widely recognized. They prepare students to engage in many fields, including graduate degrees in teaching, journalism, information technology, management, law, and administration, as well as more language-focused fields like creative writing and translation. New courses were also introduced keeping in view the demands and changes taking place in English studies and employment opportunities throughout the world.

The current curriculum followed in the Department of English Studies incommensurate with some of the most prestigious universities in the United States. With one international faculty members from the USA both holding doctoral degrees, and with all other faculty members with graduate degrees, including 2 with doctorate degrees, from highly-rated foreign institutions, the department provides an international high-quality platform for its students.

Students in the department are guided to shape their studies in order to reflect their specific interest as they prepare themselves to assume their roles as ethical and intellectual members of society. The department has expanded over the years and continues to pursue its goals and objectives vigorously. The students with specializations in the areas of literature, linguistics, or TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) choose courses based on their requirements and areas of interest. The main focus of both the undergraduate and graduate curricula is to prepare students most effectively to face the challenges of employment and leadership in their fields. With over 3 core faculty members and 2 adjunct faculty members, the favorable teacher-to-student ratio enables the department to be one of the most successful in USET.

In addition to the academic programs and courses, the department also organizes a variety of activities and workshops, such as the Colloquium and Discourse series of lectures. Both local and international scholars are regularly invited in this platform to deliver their lectures over ZOOM cloud meeting during Covid-19 pandemic situation. All these activities besides the programs and courses keep the students and faculty members engaged with the contemporary world and thus active.

As USET embarks upon the move for university-wide accreditation by American and Australian institutions, the role of the Department of English Studies has become an integral part of its academic drive. As a part of this, student learning outcomes and assessments, conducted by the faculty members, are consistently applied to gauge progress and uphold the highest institutional standard. This ongoing process is a demonstration of the department’s commitment to attaining the highest standards in academic excellence.

BA Honors in English program prepares students taking up careers where English is needed. The courses offered to introduce students to a wide range of literary genres, offering a combination of survey courses and intensive ones focusing on special areas or genres. Students are also required to take several courses in language and language teaching to prepare them for teaching careers at schools and colleges where language and literature are not exclusive. Other careers open to BA in English graduates would be in the fields of journalism and print media. Graduates may also opt to go on for higher studies for which the intensive courses will have prepared them adequately.

To obtain BA Honors in English, students need to study for four years in 8 Semesters completing a minimum of 123 credit hours. Teaching-learning for 12 academics, contact hours are assumed to be equivalent to 1 credit hour. Thus, each 3-credit is a full unit course which requires (3*12) = 36 contacts/ academic hours.

Grading System

Following the UGC guidelines, the grades at the University are indicated in the following manner:

Grades without numerical value
P: Pass
I: Incomplete
W: Withdrawal

Pass/ Fail Option

A student can take maximum 18 (eighteen) credit hours in each semester. A make-up failure of 6 (six) credit hours may be allowed depending on situation and nature of the course/s. Other procedures on pass/ fail option are executed according to the rules and regulations of the University.

Incomplete (I)

An incomplete (I) grade is assigned only when a student has failed to complete one or more requirement/s of the course for unavoidable reasons/ accidental circumstances. This incomplete (I) grade will stay until the student appears in the make-up examination at the first available opportunity. If he/ she fails to appear in the make-up examination, the (I) grade will automatically be converted into (F) grade.

Withdrawal (W)

Withdrawal is assigned to a student who withdraws from the course within the deadline for withdrawal with a ‘W’ grade. A student, who withdraws after this date, will earn the grade based on his performance before his withdrawal. The exception to this rule may be made on medical grounds and on terms and applicable conditions of the University.

The Grade Point Average (GPA) is computed in the following manner:

Grades Review Procedure

The Academic Council of the University administers the Grading Regulations and reviews course grades submitted by the Department.
